Japan Part-time Income Walls Checker
Spouse-of-Japanese, Dependent, and other visa holders working part-time face a complex set of income thresholds (the "walls"). This checker tells you which walls you've crossed and what each means.

At ¥1,200,000 you must enroll in social insurance.
- Resident tax begins (~¥1,000,000)
- Old income tax line (¥1,030,000) — now effectively ¥1,600,000
- Social insurance line (¥1,060,000) — only at large employers
- Social insurance line (¥1,300,000) — dependent of spouse threshold
- Spouse special deduction full amount (¥1,500,000)
- New income tax line (¥1,600,000) — 2025 reform
- Spouse special deduction ends (¥2,010,000)
※ Spouse-of-Japanese visa or dependent visa holders: most of these walls also apply to you. The 130万 social insurance line is the most significant: above it, you can no longer be on your spouse's health insurance.
